Malcolm's in the Orkneys
Hi fellow Malcolms,My name is John Reginald Malcolm and I currently live in Newcastle, just north of Sydney, Australia. During my Grandmothers memorial service last week I became burdened with the need to finish her sister-in-law's work.My great Aunty Mira had put together a short piece on my Great Great Grandfather, William Alexander Malcolm (1839 - 1917) born in Stromness, The Orkney's. I received this piece several years ago and have been slowly building knowledge from this document, but with two young children, time is hard to come by. The service last week put this item back into my mind and so I have registered today and would like your help.I am now in the process of arranging a holiday to my wife's hometowns of Donegal and Sligo in Ireland and we are planning one week in Scotland. I would like to use this time wisely and discover my roots. If anyone has any information on Malcolm's in the Orkneys could you please pass on. Any information or links to the affects of the Disruption of the Church of Scotland (1843) on teachers would also be helpful. My Great Great Grandfather sailed from Stromness to Napier (New Zealand) in 1872 on board the Chile with his wife Elizabeth and 5 children on 12 September. he took on various headmaster rolls within the New Zealand at Napier Grammer, Tokomairiro Grammer, Christchurch Normal Training College, Ashburton and Aukland from 1872 till his death in 1917 at the age of 79.I believe that he also taught or tutored the Earl of Elgins sons prior to 1865 while studying at Moray House Training School. His first wifes name was Elizabeth Harrison of Northumberland and during this time he taught at a public school in Dunfermline.I still have a lot of gaps which I am keen to fill.I hope that this has at least been of interest to you and would greatly appreciate your help.RegardsJohn Malcolm
